Public Profile

Distinguished and Famous people from Lake Macquarie

🎨 Sir William Dobell

Painter William Dobell made Wangi Wangi his home, giving Lake Macquarie a lasting connection with one of Australia’s best-known portrait artists. A three-time Archibald Prize winner, he also painted landscapes and found subjects in the domestic world around him, including his dogs. His work was distinguished by close observation and a willingness to experiment with how character could be expressed in paint. The city’s Dobell Festival continues that association through exhibitions, talks and activities. His local significance combines residence with creative work: the lake was part of a working artist’s life, not merely the location of a later tribute.

🔬 Tannatt William Edgeworth David

Geologist Tannatt William Edgeworth David undertook extensive coal surveys in the Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie region. His field notebooks, preserved by the University of Sydney, document that work from his years with the New South Wales Geological Survey before he became the university’s geology professor in 1891. The notebooks preserve his field observations and the practical detail behind that geological work. His later scientific journeys extended to Antarctica and elsewhere, but the region’s rocks and coal deposits formed an important part of his Australian professional work.

📖 Roland Robinson

Roland Robinson made his home at Belmont in the late 1970s after decades of poetry, travelling and literary work. His writing combined close attention to nature with a powerful interest in stories shared by Aboriginal people, including the Yuin storyteller Percy Mumbulla. He also encouraged younger writers through editorial and publishing activity. Honours in his later years included the Patrick White award and an honorary doctorate from Newcastle. Belmont was his sustained final home, and a local library and literary award later carried his name. The connection rests on residence as well as remembrance.
